Last Week This Morning: Resilience in the desert

by Abigail Jackson

Resilience in the desert. One Arizona tells the story of the fight against Arizona’s infamous racial profiling law, SB1070, and everything that’s happened in the decade since.

Paying the price for years of cuts. Arizona spends less on public health than almost any other state in country.

Compounded injustice. Tribal governments have yet to receive the money they are owed from the latest stimulus bill, money that’s desperately needed during a pandemic that has hit Native communities especially hard.

“This is where we are.” Tarana Burke and Rebecca Traister offer their thoughts as the progressive movement grapples with Tara Reade’s sexual assault allegation against Joe Biden.

“This company failed us”. Workers at Amazon, Target, Instacart and other companies organized strikes on Friday to demand better pay and working conditions, including protective equipment and paid time off.

Help undocumented families make it through. The Arizona Undocumented Workers Relief Fund will help undocumented families, many of who don’t qualify for stimulus checks or unemployment, meet their basic needs. Donate now—One Arizona is matching all gifts up to $50,000.

Los Angeles Rises Up

LA rises up. Community members in LA continue to protest against extreme workplace ICE raids in the city, banding together to protect their neighbors. Federal law enforcement agencies, alongside LAPD, have continually escalated their presence and tactics at these demonstrations, as we have seen them use tear gas, flash-bangs, less-than-lethal rubber bullets, and other aggressive […]

We keep us safe

Public pressure works. Although the Trump administration continues to push violent and dangerous anti-immigrant rhetoric, the last week has shown that our consistent defiance is beginning to pay off. In San Diego, hundreds of community members banded together after ICE was seen raiding local restaurants; they surrounded the ICE agents, chanting, and peacefully herded them […]
