Last Week This Morning: Rising costs

by Abigail Jackson

Blow to Brnovich. A judge has denied Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich’s request to end the vaccine mandate for federal workers and contractors. Brnovich, a candidate for governor, is yet another example of Republican electeds in Arizona utilizing their positions of power to appeal to a radical base for political gain.

Sinema called out by Vets group. On Veterans Day, Sen. Sinema tweeted to honor the holiday. Don’t miss this thread by Common Defense, a veterans group that has attempted to express concerns to Sen Sinema’s office about voting rights and other issues, only to be largely ignored.

BBB updates. Congress is continuing to work to pass the Build Back Better Plan, with the House eyeing a vote this coming week. If it passes, the legislation will go to the Senate, where we need conservative Democrats like Sinema and Manchin to represent those who elected them and vote yes. Economic anxiety has become even more prevalent as costs of living continue to rise, and the Build Back Better Plan would lower the expenses of childcare, healthcare, and more at a critical time for working families.

Rally recap. Watch this video from the Unite for Our Future Rally, where Arizonans gathered to call on our Senators and Representatives to pass Build Back Better with no further cuts.

Support immigrants. Text “Call Now” to 877-877 to tell your Senators that you support Build Back Better, and specifically the inclusion of a pathway to citizenship in the bill.

Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, it took until June 19, 1865 for Union troops to reach Texas, the westernmost Confederate state. Juneteenth has been celebrated since 1866, but was not […]

Los Angeles Rises Up

LA rises up. Community members in LA continue to protest against extreme workplace ICE raids in the city, banding together to protect their neighbors. Federal law enforcement agencies, alongside LAPD, have continually escalated their presence and tactics at these demonstrations, as we have seen them use tear gas, flash-bangs, less-than-lethal rubber bullets, and other aggressive […]

We keep us safe

Public pressure works. Although the Trump administration continues to push violent and dangerous anti-immigrant rhetoric, the last week has shown that our consistent defiance is beginning to pay off. In San Diego, hundreds of community members banded together after ICE was seen raiding local restaurants; they surrounded the ICE agents, chanting, and peacefully herded them […]
