LWTM: Mourning the Lives Lost to Police Brutality

By Abigail Jackson

Police brutality. Amid the trial of Derek Chauvin, the police officer charged with murdering George Floyd last year, two other police killings are receiving national attention as protestors mourn the lives unjustly lost to police brutality. Daunte Wright, an unarmed, 20-year-old black man was fatally shot by Minneapolis police during a traffic stop. Newly released bodycam footage shows that 13-year-old Adam Toledo, who was fatally shot by Chicago police in late March, was unarmed and had his hands up when he was CPD killed him.

Keep the promise. Following blowback from lawmakers and refugee rights groups urging Biden to Keep the Promise, Pres. Biden reversed his announcement that he would maintain Trump’s historically low refugee admissions limit. Democratic lawmakers asked Biden to include a pathway to citizenship for undocumented essential workers in the latter part of his infrastructure package targeting education and childcare. The Dream and Promise Act passed the House last month, but will likely face a filibuster in the Senate if the rule is not eliminated  by Democrats.

“No Promo Homo”. Republicans in the Arizona Legislature passed a bill that attacks every aspect of safe, accurate, and appropriate sexual education in Arizona by creating unneccessary barriers to accessing the curriculum. It attempts to reintigrate the basis of “No Promo Homo”, an infamous outdated Arizona law. This bill sneaks in a provision which would require parents to opt their students in/out of LGBTQ+ topics, extending to the mention of historical events and figures. Activists are calling on Ducey to veto the bill.

Interview with Bruce Franks. Check out this special episode of Capitol Watch, where we discuss a bill that would criminalize protesting, HB 2039, with Bruce Franks of Mass Liberation Arizona. HB 2039 will be heard in committee next week.

Demand Ducey veto SB 1456.  This bill reinstalls the infamous “No Promo Homo” back into law, 2 years after Gov. Ducey signed a bill repealing it. SB 1456 passed Thursday on partisan lines. Tell Ducey to veto it.
