We have a budget!

by Abigail Jackson

We have a budget! On Wednesday the Arizona Legislature passed a budget that makes key investments in housing, education, healthcare, and tribal communities. These wins are a result of the tireless efforts by grassroots organizations who have been fighting for our communities for years. One disappointment from the budget is that Republicans refused to negotiate to put a cap on their out of control universal voucher program that threatens to bankrupt our state. While we celebrate the wins from this budget, the fight to repeal the voucher program is not over.

Where’s Wendy? An Arizona judge lifted Wendy Rogers’ restraining order against a local reporter who was investigating her residency, ruling that investigative reporting is a “legitimate purpose” . Rogers had been using the order to avoid questions as to whether she actually lives in Flagstaff, the district she represents, as required by Arizona law. While she owns a mobile home in Flagstaff, according to neighbors, her Tempe home has been her primary residence for at least a decade. Rogers has collected nearly $20,000 for travel reimbursements from Flagstaff to the Capitol in less than a year.

There is no “both sides.” Senator Kyrsten Sinema refused to condemn Arizona election deniers such as Kari Lake and Blake Masters, despite the serious harm they have caused to our democracy. She’s so desperate for Republicans to like her that she tried to “both sides” the MAGA effort to spread lies in an attempt to overturn our elections. These conspiracy theories led to a violent attack at the U.S. Capitol, death threats against election workers, and have been the basis for numerous bills that attack our right to vote. It’s ridiculous that Sinema can’t call the problem what it is, but let’s be clear, Republicans alone bear the responsibility for these extremist lies.

No Tyrants

Celebrating Juneteenth. Thursday was Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day: a federal holiday recognizing the emancipation of enslaved people in Confederate States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, it took until June 19, 1865 for Union troops to reach Texas, the westernmost Confederate state. Juneteenth has been celebrated since 1866, but was not […]

Los Angeles Rises Up

LA rises up. Community members in LA continue to protest against extreme workplace ICE raids in the city, banding together to protect their neighbors. Federal law enforcement agencies, alongside LAPD, have continually escalated their presence and tactics at these demonstrations, as we have seen them use tear gas, flash-bangs, less-than-lethal rubber bullets, and other aggressive […]

We keep us safe

Public pressure works. Although the Trump administration continues to push violent and dangerous anti-immigrant rhetoric, the last week has shown that our consistent defiance is beginning to pay off. In San Diego, hundreds of community members banded together after ICE was seen raiding local restaurants; they surrounded the ICE agents, chanting, and peacefully herded them […]
