Where the Remaining Democratic Candidates Stand on the Issues We Care About

With the Arizona primary coming up on Tuesday, March 17th (find your voting location here) and the last day to vote early in person or drop off your ballot to a physical location being Friday, March 13th, we understand the importance of knowing where candidates stand on the progressive issues that matter to us. We have compiled a list of the positions of the two remaining Democratic candidates based on their current policy platforms.

IMMIGRATION: 

 CANDIDATE: JOE BIDENCANDIDATE: BERNIE SANDERS
Has not come out in favor of abolishing ICE, despite it being one of the newer agencies that have caused fear and violence in communities of color. Is in favor of abolishing ICE and return people who were unjustly deported under the Obama and Trump administrations.
Has no plan to repeal Section 1325 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which harshly criminalizes immigrants who cross the border without a visa seeking to better their life.Is in favor of repealing Section 1325 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which harshly criminalizes immigrants who cross the border without a visa seeking to better their life. 

CRIMINAL JUSTICE:

CANDIDATE: JOE BIDENCANDIDATE: BERNIE SANDERS
Is against decriminalizing cannabis on a federal level or legalizing it recreationally despite the mass incarceration that has occured due to its criminalization. Is in favor of decriminalizing cannabis on the federal level, expunging past cannabis-related records, and legalizing it recreationally federally. 

HEALTHCARE:

CANDIDATE: JOE BIDENCANDID ATE: BERNIE SANDERS
Is not in favor of establishing Medicare for All, despite not implementing it leaving millions of Americans without healthcare.Is in favor of establishing Medicare for All, ensuring that millions of Americans who do not have health insurance are covered.
Does not guarantee healthcare as a universal human right.Guarantees healthcare as a universal human right. 

EDUCATION:

CANDIDATE: JOE BIDENCANDIDATE: BERNIE SANDERS 
Is not in favor of free public college, only limiting it to community college.Is in favor of ensuring education is accessible by providing free college to all who want it.
Is only in favor of selective student loan relief for those who qualify and applied through public programs. Is in favor of boosting the economy by relieving all student loan relief, private and public.

ENVIRONMENT: 

CANDIDATE: JOE BIDENCANDIDATE: BERNIE SANDERS
Environmental plan does not list the federal government’s role in assisting and guiding local and state governments in combating climate change.Has a plan to direct the Department of Energy to supplement local and state government in assisting with climate change reversal plans. Also details grants and aids to local and state programs to help assist their efforts.
Does not refer to climate change as a top urgent priority during a potential presidency.Consistently names climate change as one of the most urgent threats challenging the United States and the entire world, referring to it as one of the biggest priorities in a potential presidency.
